5. Nodules
Nodules are deep, inflamed, and hard bumps on the skin. They can be painful and are usually treated with prescription medication. Due to their size and severity, they can leave scars.
6. Cysts
Severe acne is often categorized by cysts. These are large, pus-filled lesions that are usually painful and can cause significant scarring. This form of acne requires medical attention and can involve treatments such as prescription medication or corticosteroid injections.
7. Acne Conglobata
Acne conglobata is a severe form of acne characterized by deep abscesses, severe damage to the skin, severe scarring, and often, depression. It usually appears on the back and chest and requires aggressive treatment.
8. Hidradenitis Suppurativa
One particularly severe and painful type of pimple-like condition is Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS). HS is not actually acne, but it can mimic the appearance with deep, painful lumps under the skin. Treatment options are varied depending on the stage and severity, with severe cases potentially requiring hidradenitis suppurativa surgery.
